Konnichiwa, taste adventurers! Prepare to embark on a savory journey with our Crispy Vegan Teriyaki Tofu. This dish will transport you to the bustling streets of Tokyo, where modern flavors meet traditional cuisine in perfect harmony. Each bite of this crispy tofu provides a delectable umami experience, glazed with a sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce that's simply oishii (delicious)!

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cut into cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Steamed white or brown rice, for serving
  • Steamed vegetables (broccoli, bell peppers, snap peas), for serving
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish
  1. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, grated ginger, and minced garlic to make the teriyaki marinade.
  2. Place the tofu cubes in the marinade and gently toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, create a slurry with cornstarch and water.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated tofu cubes, reserving the extra marinade.
  5. Cook the tofu cubes for 2-3 minutes on each side until crispy and golden brown.
  6. Pour the reserved marinade into the pan, add the cornstarch slurry, and stir well to coat the tofu. Cook until the sauce thickens.
  7. Serve the crispy teriyaki tofu over a bed of fluffy rice and your choice of steamed vegetables.
  8. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions for an authentic touch.
